From Portugal ... to France!

Yup.  The French are at it again.  It's always something with the French.  Just got a notice that, when we dock on Thursday, the French are striking.  Now, the French striking is nothing new.  They strike about everything.  Jobs. Retirement. Food. Lodging. Immigration.  The U.S.  But this time it is about transportation.  Why should we care?? Well, the cruise ship warned us that all public transportation will be shut down -- trains, taxis, busses.  All of it.  So people will be stranded on the pier in Monaco with no way to get to the airport.  Now Monaco is not a bad place to be "stuck." Lots of sunshine.  Lots of celebrities.  VERY expensive stores with VERY expensive merchandise.  Lots of yachts that look like cruise ships.  But none of that will get you to the airport.  So...it's just the French.  Most of the people humphhhh about the French.  They are irritated to angry, depending.  We, on the other hand, Bos and I just chuckle.  Because its so French-like.  Yawn.  What is new???  It would be more astounding if they WEREN'T striking -- about something or other!!  We have send an email to our travel agent.  We may be hoofing it to Cannes.  But, if we can get there, we have rented a car and we will attempt to drive all over France -- and maybe, if we decide to be nice, we may pick up a few Americans and deliver them to their destinations.  You see, no matter what, we are from the U.S.  and striking was so 19th century to us!!

  1. There is a French lady (youngish) in our Spanish group. I teased her the other day because she is so un-French...always laughing, smiling, in short, a hoot. And the subject of the striking French. Heavily socialized (talking benefits here) they are x # weeks of vacations...and they want more? The poor Americans who actually have to work with no promise of vacations.
In this case, the French have the right idea...more vacation is better than none. Also, she mentioned the small # of children each family has so to encourage more, larger families are subsidized by the govt. Ah, the French...in some ways there is a little bit of envy on our part. They are so chic, but
I digress. They know how to strike.☺

FYI, I struck in the 70's I believe, and we teachers in Madison, WI won. Wouldn't be the same today.

  2. I guess if you had to get "stuck" somewhere, Monoco is as good a place as any!

  3. Hopefully you will get to your rental car. I would hate to think of you having to WALK to the car rental place. Or worse, staying in Monaco!
