Is One Leg Shorter Than the Other????....

We told you we were on the boat! Well, a little bit about the boat.  We have been on three of the Regent boats.  Had terrific times!  The rooms were spacious, walk in closets, large bathrooms, balconies, living areas along with bedrooms areas with king size beds.  This boat is different.  The rooms are adequate -- long and narrow as you expect on most cruise ships.  We do have a small walk-in closet.  And they were able to squeeze in a shower and tub, but it is a squeeze!!  And we have a small balcony. BUT... the ship is in a permanent list.  What I mean is: it is at a 15% angle --- permanently.  So you walk tilted, you sleep tilted, you sit tilted, you eat tilted.  And you chug and chug and chug when the boat is moving.

Here’s why... the frame of the ship was built by the Italians for the Soviets and it was meant to be a freighter.  But...at the last minute the Soviets refused to buy it, so it was sold to a cruise ship operator and they built the hotel part on top of the freighter.  We were warned on a previous cruise about the list.  Well, it really does do that! And, since we are not on land a whole lot, we are crooked most of the time!  Eerie feeling.

I’m not sure if that is the reason, but yesterday, shortly after the ship began moving again, I got sick and started throwing up with diarrhea.  Bos says it is food poisoning, from the hot dogs we had for lunch.  But HE was not sick!  So he bought me seasickness wristbands and they or SOMETHING worked and I feel great today...

Yesterday was Bulgaria...today is Romania.  Most of the people went to Bucharest, which is a 3 hour ride to and a 3 hour ride back from.  Too long Bos maintained.  So I will let you know what WE did soon...

  1. Love the list story...if one isn't inclined toward motion sickness, the 15% list would certainly have one off balance. I consider myself forwarned.

  2. Wow - listing on a ship - this would be why I am paranoid about houseboats like Sausalito!

Let us know about ROmania! I am fascinated about that country. Right on the borderlands of the Ottoman Empire -

  4. Just realized! I am reading your blog like if you are still there, and you may well be home by now. (No, three months on a diplomatic mission...good to know.)
I am behind on internet/email since we were in San Diego/La Jolla, which is more like how the other half live...those that don't know what winter is all about and those who have never lived on a budget....then I read about Bulgaria...It's a crazy world.

I remember we took my dad...in initial stages of Alzheimer's to Byerly's flagship store in ST. Louis Park, MN to choose the dish we'd prepare for his birthday meal. He just stood there and said, "What did we do to deserve this?" He meant, "What did we Americans do to deserve such affluence?" What did he choose? Artic char which is salmon-like fish fresh from Alaska.

Byerly's is the best supermarket store I have ever been to. Zabar's in Manhattan may have it beat in diversity, but Byerly's got it beat in presentation...by miles..but I digress.

  5. Sorry about the sickness and glad you got some relief! Had no idea the Navigator had such issues. Seems in this day and age a list could be adjusted- maybe a pontoon on one side.

  6. Motion sickness wrist bands are the BEST. Of course, I have no idea if they'll help with my motion sickness, but they sure helped with the morning sickness. I promise you I would not want to be on a boat that lists. You are a better man than I am, Gunga Din...

  7. I think that you should get a 15% reduction off the "list" price of the cruise.
Sorry about the motion sickness. I had it just once when we crossed the English Channel and it wasn't fun!
You are describing your trip so well, I feel like I've been right there with you. In fact the room is starting to spin. I don't feel so well.

  8. A couple things: Joanie, I am all for a 15% reduction in the "list" price. Elaine, they are dry-docking this ship in Nov. to try and fix the "list". KaY, you have never been to Wegmans in Rochester, NY. It is supposed to be the best grocery store in the country and NO store can beat it, I promise!!
